I have no formal art training. In fact, when hearing that I came top in maths at school, my art teacher commented that it was fortunate that I was good at something!
I admired mosaics in various forms for years, from sumptuous religious images, Roman domestic mosaics, to pebble mosaics in the streets of Spain and Portugal. In 2014 I was lucky to be able to attend a three day course in mosaics at Orsoni in Venice, and this fired my enthusiasm to create my own work. Since then I have experimented, and continue to experiment, by trial and error. For some time I have been taken with the process of combining coloured glass – be it smalti, tiles or glass shards - with matt ceramic tile. I find the contrast of textures appealing. I am also keen on a way of cutting tiles into curves which is incredibly time consuming but produces a flowing effect which I rather like, far removed from traditional square stone tesserae.
